Thanksgiving weekend..

Started with a long drive, stop for pies, don't forget the Coolwhip, arrive at 8:30 a.m., get ready to go to the community center for a dinner sponsored by the local churches, home, sharing memories of Dad, its hard on my Mom.

Sister was the evil one, no happy birthday call for me, no Thanksgiving call for Mom. I wonder if she'll ever see the error or her ways.

Have done a lot of errands, got a few more to do today. Weather ha been showers, and occasional sun. Got to get a few more things done today then back to Naples and get my life in gear, ready to face another week.

I'm now officially old enough to order off some senior menus, the magic number is 55.

Happy Birthday, Alan!

(The Kid's dad turns 55 in January - can you imagine parenting a hyperactive 7-1/2-year-old??)

Could do it..

I sort of miss the aspects of parenting. For a brief time, while I was married I had a stepson and I have also been a foster parent at the same time. Finding creative ways to channel all that energy was a joy. Tyler, my stepson, had a computer by kindergarten, he was in martial arts at 4 years old, he loved sports. I hope the years I spent parenting left some mark on his life. My ex-wife has kept him away, although I do get to see him on occasion at his father's house (I know her first husband). Yes, a hyper kid can get on your nerves at times, but the joys of seeing them grow and mature are worth it.

But how old were you when you were a step-parent?

I only mentioned that because The Kid's dad and I are relatively old parents, and it can all be quite a challenge to our energy levels! Also, our first babysitters were teenagers, a couple of whose parents were younger than The Kid's dad. ;)

I was a step parent from 46 to 50 years old. My wife was younger, in her late 30's. I did think of times when I'd be the old man, in fact at some parent teacher conferences they asked if I was his grandfather. I've had gray hair for many years. I can relate to the babysitter situation, I was much older than my neighbors.

(I was nearly 39 and he was 47 when The Kid was born in 1995.)
