curmugeonIt seems in this country we a facing a major battle. Those who have had power for the last 8 years aren't going to go quietly. Money rules, and he who has money, has power in Washington. The election of Barak Obama was a blow to this power structure, a case where their massive money did not buy the influence they wanted, and the party they had hoped to sustain them, failed. Nobody ever saw this coming. The small donations from real people, the audacity of hope inspired a generation to push for change.
Now we get down to reality. Obama may be for change, but the rest of Washington is still living in an other era. The next move for the citizens of this country is to elect real people to Congress. No, I don't think we need ex-CEO's or corporate executives to run the country, quite the contrary, we need people who have lived like most of us, struggling to put food on the table and pay the bills.
Real people, without the country club memberships, who maybe don't play golf, who work for a living. People who can speak to power, who know how hard it is to deal with a sick child and have to debate about going to the ER because that means something else in the budget has to be sacrificed. Someone who has one good outfit in the closet they wear to go to church on Sunday. Someone who drives a car, and makes the payment, or just drives a car, hoping it won't break down before they make their last payment. Someone who eats at Denney's and not at some bistro near the beach. Someone who knows what living is all about because they experience it every day, not digest data from a focus group.
We need another ray of hope, another people's campaign, to remove those who serve for personal gain (the realtors and businessmen who currently dominate local politics) and replace them with people who can relate to the voters.
We need to fight the power....
