the inland sea

We have an inland sea in California... the Salton Sea... a brackish, briny, desolate place. Here is a distorted panorama of the shore at Desert Shores, a community on the northwest shore. inland sea copy copy

Recently we saw a movie called Bombay Beach, a documentary on the community currently living at the Salton Sea. It was beyond depressing.

No matter where you go around the Salton Sea you see poverty. The Salton Sea collects the agricultural run off and the place stinks more times than not. It is still amazing that it exusts, but the future is in doubt. It has become an important place for birds migrating, a rest stop and feeding location (there is still quite a large fish population there).

I'm glad to hear it is important for birds and fish. I used to water ski in the Salton Sea when I was young, so I was shocked to see the deterioration. It seemed like the people the documentary focused on were in a downward spiral. There was one little boy being treated with two different drugs for his ADD and it seemed really sad and hopeless. Then, his mother who seemed unable to cope with life as it was found out she was pregnant. Ack!

We walked out stunned.
