The more I read and experience in life the more I need friends to share those little bits of history with.

Yesterday we had a lunch to honor the birthdays of co-workers who had birthdays in the month of July. At that lunch, our manager brought up the subject of the employee recognition banquet, an annual event, financed by the employees, to recognize the good people for the year. This was presented as ticket sales are low this year, much as morale has been. The implied threat was given that if you did not attend the division manager would be embarrassed and people would be given the assignment to the thankless task of organizing the following years' event. So much for a true spirit of co-operation and teamwork.

Isn't it funny how management does not see themselves as the worker sees them? Do they think that workers don't see that the sole purpose of this event is for their benefit? If they really cared about their workers, other than protecting their productivity bonuses, they would cover more costs, lowering ticket prices, and making the event something people would want to attend, not something we were 'encouraged' to attend.

So be it for my rant on that topic, the bottom line is to protect my job and to keep them off my back, I'll buy my $25 ticket, eat my dinner, have a few drinks, make my face seen, then leave early with a weak excuse, so I can go do what I want to do, not what I feel coerced into doing.
