Ted Koppel...
May. 1st, 2004 12:12 amTonight I watched the complete broadcast of Nightline and the reading of the names and the display of photographs of those who have fallen in this conflict. I will not honor this by calling it a war, because as times have changed we have used this term too loosely. War is declared, an enemy and objective are defined. We started this war based on lies and faulty intelligence, but I doubt the last part, having worked in the intelligence community. We always tried to be sure that before the intelligence went to Washington, we had checked and double checked the facts.
When I saw the faces of the fallen, I could only think the families who have lost a loved one, and I know some of that pain when I lost my Dad a little over a year ago. It hurts, it hurts a lot. It is time for reflection, a time to remember. I might think this war is unjust, but I cannot forget those who died. Just this week we opened a monument to the millions who fought in World War II, now is time to start planning a memorial for the fallen of this war. We have honored those who died at the World Trade Center, we have set up a fund for those people, now lets take time to take care of those who die in our military.
