1984 = 2006
Oct. 18th, 2006 12:28 pmSeems that George (aka Dubya) doesn't like it when someone questions his 'facts' or 'authority'. So, this is what the bill he signed yesterday says (in part)
"Any person subject to this chapter who with intent or reason to believe that it is to be used to the injury of the United States or to the advantage of a foreign power, collects or attempts to collect information by clandestine means or while acting under false pretenses, for the purpose of conveying such information to an enemy of the United States, or one of the co-belligerents of the enemy, shall be punished by death or such other punishment as a military commission under this chapter may direct."
That means that you better be careful what you link to or what you post. One more step for fear, one giant leap for paranoia.
Then there is this...
"Any person subject to this chapter who, in breach of an allegiance or duty to the United States, knowingly and intentionally aids an enemy of the United States, or one of the co-belligerents of the enemy, shall be punished as a military commission under this chapter may direct."
This is aimed at the media and bloggers who may publish information contrary to public policy that may be tried by a military commission. Yes, you, Joe Citizen, are subject to this passage.
And you think bloggers are not the target? Think again. This is a quote from one of Dubya's own documents. So, if you have a conspiracy theory of how 9/11 happened that doesn't agreer with Dubya's version, you may be an 'enemy combatant'
Subcultures of conspiracy and misinformation. Terrorists recruit more effectively from populations whose information about the world is contaminated by falsehoods and corrupted by conspiracy theories. The distortions keep alive grievances and filter out facts that would challenge popular prejudices and self-serving propaganda.
Welcome to Orwell's dream and our nightmare.
