On my way back from the office I made a brief stop at the Orange Empire Railway Museum and got there just in time to watch them prep the steam locomotive for its daily excursion. There is something about a steam engine, watching them test every system, the hiss, the clouds of steam as they clear the pistons. The museum is a vast collection of railway history, in various states of repair. There are huge sheds and a workshop with restorations in progress. The grounds have extensive tracks, and there is always something running. If you find yourself in Southern California take some time to visit and explore. On earlier visits I've had the pleasure of riding that steam locomotive as it made a long run north through town and along side the freeway, smoke billowing from the stack and the view from the top chair in the caboose was awesome. Some day soon I'll do it again, and maybe even take a ride in the cab as it makes a run.
