time...

Nov. 21st, 2008 11:32 am
The office is quiet today... time moves slowly. I just finished my
primary task, got the numbers crunched so we can get into the hunt for
funding... to keep us working while the rest of the city crumbles under
a staggering shortfall. We are not alone in this plight, people suffer,
the economy tanks, and cities feel the pain too. What was considered
standard operational procedure just isn't.

One thing I've noticed as I grow older is the frequency of people you
know passing on increases proportionally. The older you get the more you
lose. I guess I became aware of loss early in life. I remember visiting
my Great-Grandfather Tyler just before he died... I was 4 years old. I
remember losing friends in high school, we had a tragic class, many to
traffic accidents, and some to suicides, and some due to their reckless
tendencies, they were all missed. When I went to my 10 year reunion,
there were more, Vietnam had taken a toll.

In college, the Humanities building was the most popular spot for
'jumpers'. It was tall and had outside balconies on all floors. Too many
people chose to end their life, rather than work through a problem. We
once had a mass shooting on campus when a gunman entered the library
from below near the loading dock and left many dead including the
innocent who just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Riding motorcycles is a dangerous hobby and I lost a few friends there
too. Live to Ride, Ride to Live.. there are old bikers and bold bikers,
but very few old, bold bikers. Things to think about. Having crashed a
few times, I have a healthy respect for the machine, the riding
environment, and the dangers.

I guess that one day I'm going to have a reunion with most of these
folks, not here in this realm, but somewhere out there, in a future
time, a future place. We'll have a lot to talk about, a lot to share.
Happy Birthday [livejournal.com profile] gracegiver

It may be a day early, but knowing that I may not be able to post soon enough tomorrow, I'll post it now. You are the best, a very special person of wisdom and grace.
The office is cold, too few people to warm it up vs. the air conditioning. Now for my long Friday commute. SR55 to SR91 to I-15 (South) to SR79 (South) to SR371... then 14 miles to home.

Got a doc appt on Monday after work, we will see how that goes...
