some people get smarter...
Nov. 28th, 2009 09:01 amA few things have changed of the years. During the Viet Nam era, it was on the news every night, thus the anti-war movement had plenty to say and see, and the war ended after the government couldn't handle public opinion. During the same period, journalists were not embedded, but talked freely with soldiers and were at times in combat. During Viet Nam we had a draft that touched many lives, conscription, and a two year tour of duty. The draft was something that brought the war home as local people buried their dead weekly.
Now we have a new era, we hide wars, we have a 'volunteer' military (no draft), we hide the death, we hide the returning bodies, we control the media coverage by embedding the reporters and limiting coverage. Thus we have a weak anti-war movement. The generals learned their lessons well.
The military/industrial/media complex won, the people lost.
