a poor people's march on washington?
Nov. 10th, 2010 08:42 amThis has been proposed by Jesse Jackson today.. not a bad idea, as the Republicans are going to be working hard to make us all poor, no healthcare, no social security, no homes... just a bunch of serfs to serve the oligarchs... except one thing... when they get all they want who will be able to consume and keep the capitalist dream going?
I live in a relatively poor rural community, many people have started to walk miles to the store because they can't afford the gas, they are selling everything they can to keep the power on, we have at least three food distribution programs active right now. I've see a man standing at the local Circle K market with a sign looking for work. Have of the properties on the local market are foreclosures. Real estate auctions occur every week, sometimes sooner. The real irony here is that the majority of those in the valley voted Republican. These voters are avid Fox News viewers, its on every screen you see in the stores, cafes, and the local casino. These poor people have been totally brainwashed and are they represent the future. The local high school has military recruiters roaming the halls, as it is one way pit of this town for the youth, although a few have come back to their homes in flag draped coffins. The mentality of these people is rooted in a flag waving, Christian, Republican past. I see a few rebels out there, my Coexist bumper sticker causes a stir when I park the car at the Circle K. Seems coexist is not part of the Southern Baptist theology.
Yes, we need a poor people's march, but for many rural poor, they are living in 1984 but not knowing it. They will see the poor as someone else, not them, and will think the marchers are just a bunch of pinko commie agitators who need to accept their place in life is one of misery, death, and wondering where the next meal or place to sleep will be.
No, some places are already lost. This is the Republican base, the people who voted a straight party line, and do as the media tells them (and Fox does that).
Where are our leaders? It will be up to a few to carry this forward, and they will not have an easy time, as the oligarchs and the ignorant will be fighting them every step of the way. We must keep fighting though, as we have too much to lose.
So much for this rant... the next battle is to save social security.
