I grew up during the struggles of the civil rights movement of the early 60s and knew many who took risks to go on voter registration drives and those who went on "Freedom Rides" that eventually saw the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
Now it is 51 years later and weselves again at a point where the fight continues. Back then it was a fight for dignity and equality for blacks. Now the tent is much larger. The battle for black civil rights continues. Along side it there is now a fight for LGBT rights. We must not stop there. How about dignity and rights of our Native American people? We also need to see an Equal Rights Amendment. It was started but languished as a fledgling women's right movement saw other needs to be fought for. Down deep I have always been for true equality in our country. But there is a problem. The same forces if hate and bigotry as still here. Still working to divide. Still working to hate. There is a new generation of bigots and haters. They are the tenets they learned from their fathers and forefathers. The Klan is still around. Another thing is that the problem isn't limited to the South. It exists in Northern cities. It exists in the West. Hey I'm getting ready to get back in the fight. We need to make things better.
