Who is a journalist?
Oct. 10th, 2011 08:55 amSeems that law enforcement is following in the footsteps of the Pentagon, having journalists jump through hoops to get 'credentialed' or they are not treated any better than the protestors they are covering. If we are to have a free press, and that includes some members of the media complex that can be called corporate media, we need to remove barriers to press access so that any citizen who spreads the word, or publishes can be deemed press. While at OcuppyLA, I was amazed to have conversations with members of LAPD, who were more than civil, and see their way of handling the occupation much better than their NYPD counterparts. There is an emerging underground press movement (I saw examples in Los Angeles) that is lending their voice to the 99%. We need to be sure to have these people considered journalists, just as someone from the Los Angeles Times is considered a journalist. I read a lot of blogs where I gather bits and pieces of news, and I would consider many of them journalists, at least part of the time.
