The whole capitalist system is breaking down. The powers that be are scrambling to salvage the United States economy. We have become a third world country. We will be at the mercy of the world, and you now know how important it is to have friendly relations with other countries. Things will shake out over time, we will have to wait and see where this goes, but it isn't going to be pretty. What will follow this crash? God only knows, and certainly not the wizards of Wall Street. The Neocons have one, they have reduced the government to a whimpering weakling they can (in the words of Grover Norquist) "drag to the bathroom and drown in the bathtub".

From what I've read, the bailout will cost somewhere between 500 billion and a trillion dollars. Where is that money coming from? It's going to be borrowed because this administration is not going to raise taxes for any reason. That will put our country in even greater debt, debt that will have to be paid off and with interest. The debt is now about $9.66 trillion dollars, not counting the bailout.

The theory is that "debt doesn't count." I wonder if these guys have credit cards. Do they pay their bills?

I may be wrong, but I believe this idea originated with "Government is the Problem" Reagan. I know neocons who insist that the borrowers are to blame for all this. Credit the right wing fanatics on the air for spreading that one. The lenders are innocent. Please, spare me.

We live in crazy times. I'm convinced that McCain will be elected, a disaster for this country. If he's elected, that's what the electorate will deserve. Wait! That includes you and me. We don't deserve that, nor do the millions who have some common sense.

Isn't tax & spend more sensible than borrow & spend? What ever happened to fiscal responsibility?

There's no justice.

I want to retire to Barcelona and sip a glass of wine in a cafe overlooking the Mediterranean. That's my dream, but it's only a dream. I don't have the funds and I may soon be unemployed, too. No matter. I have the dream.

Speaking of Barcelona.. My boss is on vacation there and I'm wondering how she's going to handle this meltdown...

I do not think it's the capitalist system breaking down. It's instead merely the ridiculous supply-side, trickle-down, no-regulation, "wild and free" market that broke down.

No, I somewhat agreee, but I wonder what the real cost of this fiasco will be.
