Palomar Mountain is sort of a refuge for me, a place I can go that is away, but not that far away. Driving 50 miles for solitude is worth it, even if I have to haul Mom along.
I had a wonderful experience there when I was about 22. My husband liked to fly hang gliders and the son of the man who ran the observatory made some kind of fixed wing, so we stopped in to visit and he wasn't home, but his mother invited us in to stay for lunch and made an incredible soup from vegetables in her garden. I'm never forgotten her joyful, generous spirit.
Yes, solitude is key, even with "Mom." I am ready to come home, too much city, too many people, too much noise. A car horn honks as I type. I need home and serenity. Soon!
