Memories of food....

When I was a small child I always remember that when at my grandfather's house it was always butter, real butter, and fresh strawberries year-round. It helped that he made a fortune during prohibition working for the bootleggers.

Then my aunt had a thing for avocados, and the small bottles of Coca-Cola.  This was the fifties and she would pay a lot for an avocado. We always got a Coke when we visited.

In New England, the lobster fishermen considered crabs a pest. We used to have a friend George Bracy, who would drop by a bushel basket of live crab every time he passed our house, so we cooked crab and picked and packed the crab meat every time.

Spring was for fiddleheads, then came summer and the wild strawberries, and blackberries, and raspberries, and blueberries. That was the summer. Add to that smelt, wild trout,  alewives (smoked), codfish (salted), and many varieties of heirloom apples.

Spring was for gathering, summer was for preserving, and fall and winter was the time you enjoyed the harvest. That is where I want to live again.

Yes, and people do it here, too, and where you live. I have fresh tomatoes from my son and yesterday a friend gave me a huge bunch of fresh basil from her garden. I made pesto and froze some, so it awaits a winter day, and yes, I know you look forward to a return to Maine. :)
