This story is good... and a statement about the state of our society...have we become so cold we cannot help a fellow man/woman in need?

But of course there are many other stories about troubles (or crimes) with immigrants (even with such close to WASPs as christian latin immigrants)

Thus you don't see the problem in the same manner as right dissidents do. (?)

Having worked for over twenty years in a city that was 75% immigrant I saw that the immigrant community was as much a victim of the crime as other communities. I had dealings with gang members when doing my job, and in most cases they were, as I found, much a part of the neighborhood as others. They tended to be territorial, protecting their home turf from what they perceived as outside evil. As a friend said, those near the bottom of the economic ladder tend to be willing to help others because they understand the need, and are not tainted with fear as those in the upper classes are.

It is classical "international" view, which doesn't discern cultural differences. It assumes that those people as locals have the same aspirations and the "picture of the World". It is often wrong.

Also many of immigrants are so depressed that they percieve _all_ "white" people as oppressors.

I live in a part of California that was once part of Mexico... the culture here is a mix. Yes, there are those in the Mexican and Hispanic community that live in fear, as they are here illegally, but they fear immigration, as they actively seek employment from white people. They are economic refugees, seeking more money, as our minimum wage is much more for an hour of work than they could make in a day in Mexico. I guess I do see things as a North American view... yes, there are cultural differences, and in the last 50 years we have become a country of many cultural islands, not the 'melting pot' that was America in the last century.

Those living closer to the survival level understand the need to help one another. They are not isolated and carrying AAA cards.

I do think we've become very selfish and frightened in this country. I pray our fear and greed are not what we export to the world.
