a bit of thinking and a bit of searching

I was generally upset by the whole concept of Loyalty Day, then I did a bit of research. This is a 'holiday' that is a relic from the past. The actual day is May 1st, and was created to counter the celebration of International Worker's Day that was seen as something subversive and not fitting in our capitalist model. In this day and age, when jobs are scarce and workers are finding themselves forced to accept conditions in employment that are unsafe, unfair, or just demeaning, this just re-enforces my distaste for 'Loyalty Day'.
I guess I'm getting more critical as I age. Much like most holidays, there is always a story behind it. Much like how we have degraded some holidays, moved some holidays to make for more three day weekends (where the whole meaning of the holiday is lost), or created holidays for 'heros' that in hindsight were not so pure and wholesome as they have been portrayed.
No, holidays are now just a day off, a break from work and excuse to feel good about something you know little of, an excuse for some to just get drunk.
