I have been told by some close friends that I should be careful about expressing my views on the war and the current regime in Washington, as my views might be seen by some as dangerous, and thus might prompt some to take action that might place me in danger.
At first thought this was strange, but then today I realized that their statements were a reflection of our times. We live now in a time when fear rules the way men think. I gave four years of my life to serve this country in the military, working in areas that most people know nothing about, working in intelligence, some acronyms now being tossed around on the evening news. During this time I realized that while our public persona was that of a country of honor and dedication to democracy, under the surface we were a monster bent on becoming the sole superpower.
Now I speak out of my dislike of our policies, our human rights record, of how we are now seeing the true picture of Capitalism, and how things must change. We have become a country where we have sold our soul for profit rather than humanity.
We must remember that we have to speak our minds. We must let the truth be known, we must not let fear stifle free speech. The present regime would like all of us to disappear and not be heard. The coming year we must speak, let 2004 be the year we are not confined to 'free speech zone', take it to the limit, be heard. Make this your new years resolution.
