Where are we going?
Sep. 29th, 2006 06:45 amThis election season we will be bombarded with rhetoric, subjected with fearful slogans and lies, and suffer through the name calling as the candidates avoid the real issues in a play to save their collective asses. For the better part of their time in office they pay us lip service in the form letters and replies that are meaningless while listening intently to presentations by lobbyists and special interest groups who ply their offices with propaganda and money.
The truth is the last Congress did nothing for me and you, except play to our baser emotions and prejudices. Is there any real threat to the family with allowing gay marriage? Is an illegal immigrant really 'stealing' your job? Do you benefit from the corruption and graft associated with the Iraq war? Is the 'war on terror' a real war, or is it just another attempt to prop up the military industrial complex in the form of corporate welfare.
It is time for change. We need true leadership, but where do we find it? We have a few souls who speak the truth, but they live in fear of being silenced by the political structure that calls itself our government. Power corrupts, just look at Washington. Absolute power corrupts absolutely, i.e. the Republican Party today. No, I won't let the Democrats off the hook lightly. They are just as complicit in this game. They don't dare take a stand, as it might threaten their hold on the little power they possess.
The power still remains in the hands of the citizens. We can still make change. We can vote, we can march, we can protest. Some say that all is lost, I disagree. You need to now start talking to your friends and neighbors. We need to get the message out that there needs to be another revolution. No, we don't need violence, unless we are forced by violence against us. We just need to spread the message that there is a disease in Washington and the only cure is to remove the cancer that resides there. First we must try to vote the cancer from our government. Second we need to start writing letters to the editor. Sure, many will not be published, but maybe one or two will. That will start critical thinking, thoughts of change. Plant the seeds of hope, hope for a future based on peace and justice and what was the American way. No, we don't need to rule the world, we need to be a beacon to all the world, that we are a place of peace, a place of justice, a place of opportunity for all. We need to celebrate freedom, freedom of expression, freedom of religion (the right to worship as we see fit), and freedom from religion (the freedom to not suffer from religious dogma), freedom of the press, etc.
Become a 'pamphleteer'. Publish your thoughts. We have in this technological age so many ways to express ourselves. Use these tools to spread freedom, We can beat these people who wish to shroud us in fear nd enslave us in tyranny. Don't let the events of the last few days silence the cause of peace and justice. Support those who are leading the fight, the ACLU, MoveOn, and others. Give of yourself, with money, time, and participation. Fight!
