While Kerry put his foot in his mouth and provided a sound bite for the Republicans to use against him, what he was referring to was the outstanding academic career of George W Bush at Yale. He was just an average student, very average, and outstanding, on the sidelines as a cheerleader, not too bright academically.
So as for getting "stuck in Iraq", was not a quote to belittle the "troops" (whoever to hell they are) but a jab at a man who couldn't think himself out of a porta-potty. Why do you think they refer to Karl Rove as 'Bush's Brain'?
