The nuts on the right are masters of the long game. They have been playing with fear for decades. I remember growing up in Orange County California and the John Birches having meetings in the local schools after hours. No, they have always found a 'boogyman' to start the process. Now they have a new target, called Agenda 21. Seems when you have a public hearing on a project for improving a community, the anti-Agenda 21 folks will be giving public comment for hours. They see anything with the key buzzwords as part of a United Nations plot for a one world dictatorship. Here is an article about these Agenda 21 opponents and how they work. It also identifies what these nuts see as the enemy... and why I keep a watch on these people is because they vote. I wonder if there needs to be some test of the fitness of people to vote? Maybe we should restrict voting to those who can pass the test for citizenship that we require immigrants to take before we allow them to be full citizens and vote. That would only be fair. Locally, we have the wingnuts who see any form of planning as infringing on their 'property rights' while they create dust in our air and unsightly piles of junk. All I can do is hope to one day live with people who share my vision on a sustainable community with the emphasis on community.

living small
Feb. 22nd, 2012 08:06 amJust read about this and watched a video... small living may come to San Francisco... I just wonder what it will cost? With 9 foot ceilings I'd have to fashion some trolley system for bike storage or the building would have to have secure storage somewhere. It would make urban living very appealing.

more on urban planning...
Feb. 22nd, 2012 08:13 amThere are things that get in the way of better design, and these are planning codes written decades before that are still enforced today. Here is a review of a book about urban planning. Not exactly a hot topic around the dinner table but something that needs to be looked at. Of course the anti-Agenda 21 freaks will have a fit if we move to change from the old habits and urban sprawl, but change is something we must embrace to allow mankind to live as a viable species. I may try to find this book. As a student of urban planning and design (who ended up working in engineering) this has been a topic that always interested me. I'm glad to see it being examined and the results published.
