It seems that marriage should not be part of any government law, edict, or preference. Let's say that in the eyes of government marriage doesn't exist. No filing taxes jointly, no extra fringe benefits, no mention in law. Marriage would be confined to the religious and spiritual realm. No license required. Each individual would be in the eyes of the government, just an individual. Children would be individuals who were in the care of other individuals. No extra deductions, no child care deduction, no extra 'stimulus money', everyone is treated as an individual. In the view of government, a couple could live under a civil contract to purchase property. Survivor benefits would be defied by contract. No contract, and all assets revert to the 'state'.
Then, and only then, there would be no need for laws about marriage. If two people want to form a partnership, we have laws for that, the same laws that apply to business. That reduces this to a business arrangement.
You want marriage, find a religion that will accept you. But don't expect any special treatment from the government. All men and women and children are equal in the eyes of the law.
This goes along with the ultimate separation of church and state. I can live with that.
